Why social entrepreneurs should be at the decision table
Social entrepreneurs play a key role in the transition to an impact economy, in which social value is central. They create direct positive changes, such as employment for vulnerable groups and CO2 reduction, while also working on systemic change. Their innovative solutions and critical insights make them indispensable in the policy process. Yet social entrepreneurs are still not sufficiently involved in decision-making.
In its vision document Perspective of the Pioneer , Social Enterprise NL emphasizes why this needs to change. In this article, we share the most important findings from the document (download the Dutch version here , or the English version).
The current situation: insufficient involvement of social entrepreneurs
The voices of social entrepreneurs and other sustainable innovators are still too often unheard in (political) decision-making. The Netherlands, known for its polder model and lobbying culture, weighs various interests when making policy decisions. A good example of this is the role of the Social and Economic Council (SER). Research and interviews show that established interests, focused on maintaining the status quo, often prevail in decision-making. These interests can slow down necessary transitions.
Social entrepreneurs often find themselves in a challenging environment, facing larger companies and parties with more resources and lobbying power. However, this does not mean that social enterprises cannot exert influence. There are several examples of social entrepreneurs who have already had an impact at the decision-making table. We can learn a lot from these examples.
Our recommendations:
To the government:
- Always involve social entrepreneurs in policy decisions, given their social vision and innovative solutions.
- Ensure well-structured and transparent participation processes, so that a level playing field is created.
To social entrepreneurs:
- Present yourself as a valuable and reliable discussion partner.
- Increase the visibility of your company and mission through (social) media.
- Build strategic alliances and lobbying groups to exert joint influence.
The future: more social entrepreneurs at the decision-making table
In the coming years, Social Enterprise NL will work to ensure that social entrepreneurs have a greater and more influential presence at the decision-making table.
